Chances are you’ve heard & used some Yiddish words without realizing, even if you’re not Jewish. Yiddish vocabulary has a special place in the fabric of the United States, & yet it’s an all but lost language. Music has become a powerful tool for preserving Jewish culture & ensuring that languages like Ladino & Yiddish carry on. The Shvesters (“The Sisters”) are not only breathing life into the Yiddish language but also exposing people to a genre of music, Klezmer Jazz, which can be traced as far back as the 1500s. I discovered Chava Levi & Polina Fradkin earlier this year, & they were brand new to social media, just starting to make their mark. Fast forward from June to December, they’re 13.9K followers strong on Instagram & close to 10K on TikTok. Their beautiful voices have captured the hearts of Jew & gentile alike, & they aren’t stopping anytime soon. Hop on the hype train now because I know in my heart what started as social media videos will lead to albums & live shows. I’M READY!
