🥧 After 33 preview shows and 1,544 performances, the broadway production of Waitress is coming to an end, just shy of a 4-year run. Even though I’ve never seen the show, I’m a fan of the movie & the original Broadway cast album. In fact, I’ve listened to it 3 times today. 🎧 I’m spending time this weekend saying goodbye with a trio of blog posts. I started with Adrian’s story yesterday, & today is all about fan art. I’m shining an extra bright spotlight on the character Dawn because that’s who Adrienne Shelly played in the movie. If you don’ t know that name, she is the mastermind behind Waitress. The film was her baby, & there are very few aspects that she wasn’t involved in. She was murdered at the age of 40 in November 2006. She didn’t get to grow old with her husband Andy or watch her daughter Sophie grow up. She also didn’t get to see her movie premiere three months later at the Sundance Film Festival. In spite of this tragedy, Adrienne’s legacy has been carried on by loved ones & creative women inspired by her. Her husband started the Adrienne Shelly Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports women in the film industry. A musical version of Waitress went into production approximately 6 1/2 years ago, & it debuted on Broadway in April 2016 after a series of preview shows. That isn’t even the best part! This is the first Broadway musical with an all-female creative team: director Diane Paulus, screenwriter Jessie Nelson, & songwriter Sara Bareilles. All of that stems from one low budget movie created by a determined woman with a dream. Never give up! 🥧

*Note: Yes, I know this is inspired by the cast of Waitress in London. Yes, it still belongs here. There would be no London production without the Broadway production. Also, that is Katharine McPhee in the middle who played Jenna in both the United States & the UK. 💙
