If you don’t follow my lifestyle blog, you don’t know that I have been feeling very nostalgic recently.  And by recently I mean ever since I graduated high school five years ago.  That brings me to the subject at hand: Brett Helquist.  He is an amazing illustrator, one you might recognize from the A Series of Unfortunate Events book series authored by Lemony Snicket.  His unique style is one you wont soon forget.  I was thrilled to discover that his influences include Chinese & Japanese art because I immediately guessed that when researching his work for this post.  The scenes he creates possess drama on a cinematic level.  Every time I read the Series of Unfortunate Events series, my imagination is driven by the vision Helquist brought to life; because of that, the books read like graphic novels.  I’m not sure if this is a personal choice or pure coincidence, but it seems like most of the books he illustrates take place in the past and contain a grim tale.  The environments and characters always look vintage whether they be colorless or colored.  I also see a pinch of influence from black & white films, specifically those of the melodrama and mystery variety; this is a personal observation, not a verified fact.  There are two facial characteristics that are almost always present on Helquist characters: rosy cheeks and a prominent nose.  Now that you have some background information, let’s look at artwork!
